I love to continue to learn. I think it's so important to absorb the information that is around you, and to continue to grow both personally and professionally. My favorite way to do so is by talking to industry professionals becauses it can teach you things to avoid, as well as tips for success. A great networking opportunity for PR students is to attend a PRSSA Regional Conference.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the PRSSA Regional Conference in Detroit, hosted by Wayne State PRSSA and Michigan State PRSSA. The topic: How PR was used in the revitalization of the Detroit.

It was a great experience, but here were some of my favorite bits of advice:

  • Writing and public speaking will carry you through your career, so confidence is key. If you aren't confident, your content doesn't matter.

  • Stay curious- speak up and ask questions. Your job is to ask questions and get answers.

  • In public relations, we answer they "why?" question.

  • If you can write well at 140 words, you can write well at 1,000 words.

  • Get a copy of The Elements of Style, and study it.

  • PR affords what you put into it; there's a time to pay your dues.

  • You are creating your own brand- differentiate yourself!

  • Make sure you have a work-life balance. This industry will consume you if you let it.

  • Be present and absorb the information.

  • You must always be prepared for crises.

  • Volunteer for things, don't be afraid of the dirty work.

  • Get out of town; hone your skill set outside of your comfort zone.

  • Take risks!

If you haven't gone to a Regional Conference, I highly advise you go to the next possible one. I have made meaningful connections and gained tips that will guide me for the rest of my life.

I hope some of these tips help you, and motivate you, as much as they did for me.
